Multiscale Simulation of Membrane Protein Supercomplex Organizations in Photosynthetic Membranes

Green plant photosystem II (PSII) and light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) in the stacked grana regions of thylakoid membranes can self-organize into various PSII–LHCII supercomplexes with ordered/disordered structures under different external stimuli, rendering tunable solar light absorption spectrum and photosynthesis efficiencies. In this project, we collaborated with Prof. Bernd Smit at the University of California, Berkeley to develop an EM-data-based CG model of PSII-LHCII supercomplexes to model the supercomplex organization of the micrometer-sized thylakoid membrane. We are the first group that can carry out a series of large-scale CGMD simulations to explore the supercomplex organizations under different photosynthetic membrane protein compositions. In this project we have published one paper in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B in 2015.
